For those of you who cannot get in at all you may have to turn your
firewall settings down, this worked for others like Pamela, when Pamela
turned her firewall level down she was able to gain entrance. Secondly, as
the chat applet loads it may say something to the affect, "Warning, allowing
this "exe" to run on your computer could cause harm".... This is a harmless
application, none of your info is being captured so just "accept" this
prompt by saying yes or you wont gain access. Lastly, be sure that you have
the latest version of java running on your computer. You can download JAVA
for free at http://www.java.com/en/
Now, as for names. When you first get into the chat it asks you to type the
name that you would like to go by. Unfortunately if you try a generic, well
known name like, Lisa, or Scott or Jim, chances are that the names are taken
and as soon as you try to become that name it auto-boots you back into
becoming a Guest##### again. In order to get a name other then Guest#####
simply type the command /nick thenyournewname. So in my case I would type
/nick scottybruno. Try and use a unique name so that it IS NOT taken.
Once you have changed your name to the name you wish to keep (if the names
keeps for a little while you know that it is available to you) then you
simply select from the pull-down menu below where you type text to the
chat-room, the pull-down selection labeled, "NickServ
Panel". A window will pop up and that is the NickServ Panel. So,
then, while you have already grabbed and been issued the name that you want
you then click the "Register" button on the "NickServ
Panel". Another window will pop up showing your Nickname and
there will be two empty fields; password and email address. Type in a
password that you will remember for each time you come back to chat, and
type in your email address and then click the "Register
Nickname" button. An email will be sent to you with a URL that
you then simply place into your browser, click enter/return on your keyboard
and hence your username and password will have been registered and ONLY you
will be able to use it. Keep in mind though, that after 21 days of
inactivity (not logging into chat) your nickname will be reset and open for
others to register it for themselves.
Other goodies:
In the pull-down menu below the area where you type to chat there are also
several other "Panel" elements. On the pull-down menu is the, "Avatar
Panel" which allows for you to choose an avatar (A Small Image)
that will become a part of your nickname. You don't need an avatar but they
are fun. The other interesting pull-down menu is the, "Image
Panel". This panel allows, for when you click on it, for the
image you clicked to show up in the text chat area with people whom you are
chatting with. Everyone sees the image that you click by seeing it show up
in the chat room.
Additionally, by default, any command word that you learn, such as the word,
"nick" can be used by using command language
which is rather simple. For instance, if you wish to change your name from
within the chat area and without using a "Panel" you can change your
nickname by typing the command, /nick mynewname. So in my case it would be
/nick scottybruno. (DO NOT have any spaces within
the letters of your name, this won't work.) If the name is
registered you will be allowed 15 seconds or so to type in your password to
become that nickname. Another example of command language use would be to
change the rooms topic. In order to do so you would type, /topic anewtopic.
So if I wanted to change the room topic to, say, "Scott's Brothel" (GEE,
THANKS SS!) you would type, /topic Scott's Brothel.
This covers how you get a nickname, change topics, and use commands. Oh, and
remember, all commands start with a "/".
So please feel free to ask me questions on how other things might work and I
will do my best to get you the correct answer.
My Bestest,
Scott
